Palisades Reads was founded by Palisades Cares and other community members to encourage Palisadians to read and discuss books dealing with social issues.  The second annual Palisades Reads will start the during the third week of May, 2010. 

 Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder is the second selection of Palisades Reads. 
This is the inspiring story of Dr. Paul Farmer who has dedicated his life to bring medical care to some of the poorest people in our world including Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Boston.  One local Haitian told Kidder this about Farmer: "God gives everyone a gift and his gift is healing."  At the heart of this book is the example of a life based on hope, and on an understanding of the truth of the Haitian proverb "Beyond mountains there are mountains:” as you solve one problem, another problem presents itself, and so you try to solve that one, too."

Farmer changes minds and practices through his dedication to the philosophy that "the only real nation is humanity" - a philosophy that is embodied in the non-profit he founded, Partners In Health. Partners in Health, PIH, has been very active in post Earthquake Haiti. Farmer is UN Special Envoy to Haiti.

Another organization helping in Haiti:  Lime-Aid, www.lime-aid.tv, founded by Bruce Horwitz of Lime Studios in Santa Monica. This group has organized donations of food and other supplies to support two orphanges in Haiti.
