April 13 Eco-Fair

The Village Green was the headquarters for the Eco activities during the Chamber's Health and Eco Fair. Girl Scouts from Troop # 985 passed out flyers about recycling and performed two skits on stage and representatives from Palisades Cares passed out reusable bags and information about composting and eco evenings. Students from Pali Hi's EAST class also had a table. At noon, Councilman Rosendahl presented certificates to 17 local young environmentalists including Joshua Corwin, Kevin Rosen, and the girls from troop 985 and Cadette troop.  We also dedicated the first recycling bin in a public area in the City of Los Angeles. Hopefully many others will follow soon in all areas of the city.

In another area, Dept. of Sanitation representatives explained composting and sold 9 composting bins.

April 9 Palisades Eco Evening: Sustainable Landscaping. Rick mentioned watering less, using new technology such as sprinkler controllers, and stream rotars. www.bewaterwise.com is an excellent resource. Gelson's donated reusable bags for this event. Calvary Christian School was the host.

Palisades Cares Receives Community Beautification Grant for Recycling Bins!

The Green the Palisades/Recycling Bin Project of Palisades Cares has been awarded $9600 from the Office of Community Beautification, L.A. City Dept of Public Works.  The entire town is a winner!  Palisades Cares was one of 87 community groups in L.A. to receive a grant. The grant will be matched by an equal amount of donations of money and labor from community organizations.  We will install 15 blue recycling bins made by Canterbury, a local company, next to existing trash bins that were previously installed by PRIDE.  Several people had mentioned recycling bins in town as one of their green goals for 2008. This will now be accomplished.

Recycling at the Park!

Palisades Cares received a grant from the Pacific Palisades Junior Women's Club to purchase and install recycling bins at the Palisades Rec. Center.  We will work with the Dept. of Sanitation to evaluate bin alternatives.

Campaign to Say No to Plastic Bottles.

As part of our mission to ban plastic bottles, we now sell Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottles. We have sold 105 of them and still have some 18 oz available with both sport and loop top.

"A Day without a Bag"

Over 1,200 reusable bags were distributed in the Palisades on Dec. 20 in support of this Heal the Bay project. Over 20 volunteers distributed bags donated by onebagatatime, LA City, LA County, Elyse Walker, and Palisades Cares from 11 am to 1 pm. Main distribution location was the Village Green in the center of the business district. Others were Ralph's, Vons, and the parking lot for Starbucks. Starbucks donated coffee. Ralph's gave every reusable bag user a $.10 credit. Pharmaca gave a reusable bag to each customer that spent $50.

Book Donations and Mural Painting with Access Books at Stoner Avenue School in Mar Vista on October 20 and November 10. Members of Palisades Rotary, students from Palisades High School, and members of Councilman Bill Rosendahl's staff helped paint murals at Stoner Avenue School. They also sorted books donated by Palisades High school students, the Palisades community, and Access Books. Palisades High has donated 500 books to date! Here, Rotarians and a Pali  High student are painting.

"Green the Palisades" In October, Palisades Cares applied for a Community Beautification Grant towards the purchase and installation of 15 recycling bins in the commercial district of the Palisades. We received $9,000 in matching pledges from Michael Edlen, Rotary, the Optimists, the Lion's Club, the Riviera Masonic Lodge, and local residents including Kevin Niles, the Melas family, Betty Resnick, Josie Tong, and Charlene Ahern.  Councilman Bill Rosendahl, members of PRIDE, the Village Green Committee, and other residents also backed this project. This was a cooperative effort between members of the Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA, and the community.  We will learn about grant finalists in mid-January.
